Making sense of SEER – choose the efficiency that is right for you

If you’re replacing existing central air conditioning in Ottawa, chances are it has a very low efficiency. Energy efficiency is measured in Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER). This rating system measures how much cooling you’ll get for a given amount of energy. Existing units tend to be between 5 and 10 SEER. The current minimum SEER for new units in Ottawa and Ontario is 13, to be considered High Efficiency the unit must be 14 SEER or higher.

Professional central AC installation

The most important factor in choosing a new air conditioner is how it will be installed. The best air conditioner when poorly installed will not work well in the long run. What does SEER mean?

SEER, or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, is a measure of air conditioner and heat pump cooling efficiency. SEER ratings are calculated by the cooling output for an average cooling season divided by the total electric energy input during the same time frame. A higher SEER rating means greater energy efficiency.

What does HSPF mean?

HSPF, or Heating Seasonal Performance Factor, is used to measure the efficiency of a heat pump. HSPF is the ratio of the heat output to electricity use over an average season. Similarly to the SEER rating, the higher the HSPF rating, the greater the energy efficiency of the unit.
